La Piele Spa would like to share a few tips for keeping your skin young and healthy during these summer months. Though the sun feels good and we enjoy a sunny day-unfortunately, it does take a toll on the skin that cause aging & skin cancer.
Summer skin care tips
from Michelle Kelly- owner of La Piele.
Choose a sunblock with an SPF factor of 30. More importantly, your SPF should be full-spectrum in nature and contain zinc & titanium oxide. Most people complain that sun block makes their skin burn or break out-that is due to the irritating chemicals that are present in most over the counter SPF.
A higher SPF such as a 70 is not necessarily better-it is a misconception. The truth is it can do more harm than good-My best advice is how you apply your sunblock and when. Apply sunblock approximately 30 min before you are exposed to the sun-and reapply every 90 minutes. This is key to true sun protection!
2. Prevent Pigmentation
Ever wonder why some people have visible sun damage that appears like unsightly brown spots, while others are unaffected. Much has to do with our heritage-however the main factor is that some of us on a cellular level have “overactive” melanin-and as a result-the UV rays cause sun spots. Luckily, there is a way to minimize this from occurring; if we apply a topical skin brightener under our SPF-usually containing a blend of natural ingredients such as licorice, mulberry, & kojic acid-we can interfere with the over production of melanin and spare our skin to an extent.
3. Be conscious of medications
Some medications both topical and internal cause photo-sensitivity and may result in the skin becoming more reactive in the skin leading to increased sun burn and pigmentation.
For those who wear makeup-it is highly suggested to chose a makeup that contains minerals-because minerals have a natural built in SPF as well and anti-oxidants. My favorite mineral line which we carry at La Piele is Glo Minerals. The minerals are available in sheer tints, foundations, pressed & loose powders. they also make a beautiful bronzer that will give your skin a beautiful healthy glow.
5. Topical antioxidants
Choose a moisturizer or serum that contains a topical antioxidant. Antioxidants protect the skin from free radical damage- free radicals are harmful to our skin cells and attack their integrity causing aging & skin cancers. My favorite antioxidants are green tea, Vitamin C, and Acai berry.
6. Prevent clogged pores
Sweat & humidity often triggers breakouts. It is important to wash your face am & pm with a ph-balanced cleanser-avoid cleansers with “sodium laurel sulfate” which strip the skin and cause surface dehydration.
Choose a toner that contains fruit acids or witch hazel-avoid alcohol in your toner.
Be sure your moisturizer is free of mineral oil-as it is the #1 pore-clogging and acne causing ingredient.
Exfoliate 1 time per week to help prevent the clogging of pores.
A monthly deep cleansing facial will surely assist in keeping the pores clear.
