Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

To combat the dry indoor heat and the irritating effects of cold winter wind, it’s important to moisturize religiously. In addition, it’s probably time to ditch the lighter formulas you used during the spring and summer. Instead, switch to a thicker, creamier moisturizer that will protect your skin from the chill of winter. For added benefits, an anti-aging moisturizer pore minimizer will keep skin supple, smooth and youthful in appearance.

Don’t Skip the Sunscreen

Contrary to popular belief, sunscreen is just as important during the winter as it is during the summer. In fact, the winter sun can be even more damaging than the summer rays! To prevent sun damage, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to the face, neck and hands 30 minutes prior to going outside, then reapply as necessary. For your lips, choose gloss or balm with SPF 15 or higher. For added protection, you can always use foundation with SPF, as well.

Exfoliate

Since colder temperatures can lead to the buildup of dead skin cells, regular exfoliation is essential to a dewy, glowing complexion. Plus, by sloughing off old, flaky skin, exfoliating can help clear the way for moisturizer, helping it do its job more effectively. However, when it comes to exfoliating, less is more. Choose a gentle exfoliant, and apply lightly in a circular motion.

Hydrate from the Inside Out

You’ve probably heard that drinking water is essential to healthy skin. This is because dehydration, even in its mildest forms, can have devastating effects on your complexion. Without enough water, skin can become dry and lackluster, and can add years to your appearance. To give skin that healthy glow, drink at least eight glasses of purified water each and every day.

Use a Humidifier

To escape the drying effects of indoor heating, consider using a humidifier. These devices hydrate the air, and prevent the irritating dryness associated with heating units. With the help of a humidifier, wrinkles will be less noticeable, and your skin will look dewy and fresh. Plus, humidifiers can combat dry sinuses, sore throats, coughs and more!

Nix the Hot Showers

Hot showers and baths may feel great on cold water mornings, but the drying effects they have on your skin are less than desirable. Spending long amounts of time in hot water can break down the skin’s natural moisture barrier, leaving it vulnerable to the dry, chilly air. For your skin’s sake, switch to warm water, and spend less time in the shower or tub. When dryness or irritation set in, consider soaking in an oatmeal bath or using moisturizing bath beads.

Now you’re ready to take on the chill of winter. With the tips provided here, your skin will look and feel great all winter long!

Cold weather can wreak havoc on your skin. From frigid temperatures and biting winds to the drying effects of indoor heating, the winter months often leave skin dry, patchy and irritated. Thankfully, help is available.

The following tips to winterizing your skin care regimen will help keep your skin soft, supple and smooth during the frosty winter months.

Switch Up Your Cleanser

During the warmer months, when skin is more prone to breakouts, it’s okay to use cleansers with harsher ingredients. However, during the fall and winter, gentle cleansers are an absolute must. A good way to judge cleansers is by their base: gentler solutions are typically cream-based, while harsher formulas are gel or water-based. Creamy cleansers will strip away less of your skin’s natural oils, which can prevent drying, flaking and irritation.
